Crescent Kayaks CK2 Venture: Ideal for Family, Couples, Pets, and Fishing Adventures.

Crescent Kayaks CK2 Venture kayak, now this is interesting.

Here is our dilemma: I have a fishing kayak I don't want to part with, but as a couple, we want to get out and paddle together. Plus, we have a 55-pound dog that we want to bring along.

The Cresent Kayaks Crew double kayak looked like what we wanted, so we took it out for a test paddle. It ticked all our wants except for the fishing option. I can outfit the Crew as a fishing kayak, but I wasn't too crazy about the jelly bean colour options.

When Crescent Kayaks released the CK2 Venture, our interest quickly became excitement: let's do this.

The CK2 Venture is marketed as a solo fishing kayak, making it an ideal replacement for my current kayak. Additionally, since the CK2 Venture is a reconfigured version of the CREW, purchasing a second seat transforms it into a versatile solution for a couple and their dog. I also like the new color.

So, how did it all turn out? Read on...

When it comes to versatility on the water, the Crescent Kayaks CK2 Venture kayak delivers an experience that's hard to match. Designed with the potential to accommodate multiple setups, the CK2 is a tandem kayak ideal for couples seeking adventure, pet owners wanting to include their furry friends, and solo paddlers needing a reliable fishing platform. This review explores how a couple who added a second seat uses the CK2 as a double kayak with their dog and a solo fishing kayak.

Design and Build Quality

The Crescent Kayaks CK2 Venture kayak is constructed with durability in mind. It uses high-density polyethylene that offers resilience against rocks, branches, and other natural elements often encountered on the water. At 13'9" in length and 34" in width, the CK2 strikes a good balance between stability and maneuverability. Its spacious sit-on-top design provides a solid platform that feels steady even with multiple occupants.

Setup and Versatility

This kayak's modular design is what makes it truly shine. By adding a second seat, couples can easily transition from solo to tandem kayaking, making it ideal for shared adventures. Additionally, the optional seat positioning accommodates pets, so couples can bring their dogs along without compromising comfort or safety.

Stability and Performance on the Water

One of the CK2 Venture's standout features is its stability. Even with two people and a dog on board, it maintains excellent balance and tracks well. Its hull shape ensures a smooth glide, while the wider design provides additional stability—especially useful when standing up for fishing or dealing with sudden movements from an excited pet.

Using the CK2 as a Double Kayak with a Dog

  • Roomy Interior: Thanks to its wide body, the CK2 provides ample space to accommodate a couple and a medium-sized dog comfortably.

  • Stability: With a balanced and steady hull, couples can confidently bring their dog without worrying about tipping over.

  • Easy Entry/Exit for Pets: The kayak's design makes it easy for pets to enter and exit, which is an appreciated convenience.

Solo Fishing Setup

  • Modular Seating: Transitioning from a double to a single setup is as simple as removing the extra seat. This flexibility means the CK2 transforms effortlessly into a solo fishing kayak.

  • Fishing-Friendly Features: The kayak includes plenty of storage space for fishing gear. The CK2 also has a comfortable and adjustable seat for long fishing sessions, which keeps you stable even when reeling in.

  • Room for Gear: The rear cargo area can store bait, tackle boxes, and other essentials, while the bow provides a convenient spot for a cooler or other necessities.

Pros and Cons of the Crescent Kayaks CK2 Venture

Pros

  1. Versatile Design – Easily switch between single and double setups, making it ideal for couples, solo fishing, or adding a pet.

  2. Stable and Balanced – Handles well with multiple occupants, offering excellent stability for fishing, kayaking with pets, or exploring new waters.

  3. Durable Construction – High-density polyethylene ensures it withstands scrapes and knocks in rugged conditions.

  4. Comfortable Seating – With cushioned, adjustable seats, the CK2 accommodates long adventures on the water.

  5. Fishing Features – Multiple rod holders and ample storage options make it a viable choice for anglers.

  6. Pet-Friendly – Roomy design and easy access mean pets can join without compromising stability.

Cons

  1. Heavier Build – At around 90 pounds, the CK2 is challenging to carry solo, especially for loading on top of a vehicle. My biggest gripe is that loading and moving this thing around is challenging. I see a kayak cart in the near future.

  2. Limited Speed – While stable, the wider design means it's not as fast as narrower models, which may be a consideration for solo paddlers prioritizing speed. That said it is surprisingly agile for its size.

  3. Price Point – With the cost of the second seat and fishing accessories, the CK2 Venture is a bit more of an investment. The CK2 costs 30% more than the basic Crew. For the price, you get a few upgrades like Gear Tracs, which can be used to outfit your kayak with rod holders, paddle holders, GPS mounts, etc., as well as the CREW Bow Cover and the Foam Pad Kit. Then you have to buy the second seat. Is it worth it? It depends on how much solo fishing you are planning to do. The standard Crew will do if you want to throw a rod in the boat and make a few casts. If your fishing plans include multiple rods, tackle boxes and electronics, it's worth it.

  4. Lack of Rudder System – Tracking can be slightly less precise in windy conditions or strong currents without a built-in rudder.
