Everything you need for an unforgettable overnight cycling adventure just outside the city—gear, maps, and more.

If you're seeking a quick escape from Toronto's urban hustle, an overnight bikepacking trip to Darlington Provincial Park offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity. Nestled along Lake Ontario's shoreline, this accessible getaway combines scenic cycling routes, serene natural landscapes, and convenient amenities.

The park’s early May opening allowed us to stretch our legs and kick off the bikepacking season. We eased into the adventure by taking Go Transit to get closer to our first-day goal. Starting our ride from the Rouge Hill Go Station resulted in a 50 km ride along some of Ontario's best waterfront trail sections. On day two, we rode the full 100 km back home.

Why Choose Darlington for Your Bikepacking Adventure?

Located just east of Toronto near Bowmanville, Darlington Provincial Park spans 208 hectares of diverse terrain, including gentle hills, marshlands, and the picturesque McLaughlin Bay. It's an ideal destination for bikepackers seeking a mix of coastal views, forested trails, and wildlife encounters. The park is renowned for its monarch butterfly migration, especially during the Monarchs and Raptors Weekend in early September, where visitors can participate in butterfly tagging and educational programs.

The trail, along the waterfront in Pickering, takes us as close to the lake as possible without getting our feet wet.

Planning Your Route: Cycling and GO Train Options

The journey from Toronto to Darlington Provincial Park is around 70 to 100 km, depending on your starting point. The Waterfront Trail offers a scenic and relatively flat route along Lake Ontario, passing through charming communities like Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby. Combining Cycling with GO Transit:

GO Transit provides a convenient option for those preferring a shorter ride. You can board the Lakeshore East line from Union Station and disembark at Oshawa Station. It's a manageable 10 km ride from Oshawa to the park entrance. We opted to use the Go Train on day one. Exiting at the Rouge Hill Go Station, we had a 50 km ride to the park. Bicycles are permitted on GO Trains outside of weekday rush hours, and folding bikes are allowed at all times.

Hugging the shore of Lake Ontario, lake views are plentiful.
