Two Days, One Epic Ride: Bikepacking the Simcoe County Loop Trail
Maximize your ride with this ultimate two-day itinerary, featuring top stops, great eats, and scenic trails.
The Simcoe County Loop Trail is one of Ontario’s premier cycling routes, offering an incredible mix of rail trails, waterfront views, and historic towns. This 160-kilometre loop provides a scenic and relatively easy ride, perfect for new and seasoned bikepackers seeking an extended weekend adventure. While some ambitious riders complete the loop in a single day, stretching it over two days allows for a more enjoyable and immersive experience.
This was my second overnight cycling adventure and my first time going solo. I opted to camp and carried my full bikepacking setup. This loop can be equally fun, maybe even more so, with just a minimum setup and a credit card with the many accommodation options along the way.
This itinerary follows a counterclockwise route, starting from Barrie and overnighting in Midland or Bell Falls Family Campground for campers.
Route Overview
The Simcoe County Loop primarily comprises crushed gravel rail trails with some paved and forested sections. It connects several towns, including Barrie, Orillia, Midland, and Elmvale, and offers minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for all skill levels. Wayfinding is relatively straightforward, with signage posted along the route, but bringing a GPS or map is still recommended. The best seasons to ride are spring through fall when the weather is favourable and trail conditions are optimal.
Where to Park
Park and leave your car in Barrie.
Book overnight parking at the Simcoe County Museum: Online Booking (2 night maximum).
Many hotels allow you to leave your car for the duration of your trip if you stay the first night there.
I was lucky to have a friend in Barrie where I could park.
What Kind Of Bike
A road bike with skinny tires in the hands of a skilled rider can complete this loop (though it wouldn't be my choice), but the best option is a gravel bike or hybrid bike with wider tires for comfort and stability.
