Day 1: Toronto to Parry Sound

How to Get There

Your adventure kicks off in Toronto. Pack your gear, load up your car, and head north on Highway 400. In just over two and a half hours (about 225 km), you’ll find yourself in Parry Sound, ready to immerse yourself in Muskoka’s winter beauty.

The Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre is a hidden gem for fat biking.

Fat Biking at Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre

Located along Highway 124, 10 minutes from Parry Sound, Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre is a hidden gem for fat biking. This center boasts nearly 20 kilometres of dedicated, groomed winter fat biking trails that cater to all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rider, you’ll love the well-marked paths that weave through serene forests and rolling terrain.

The Ride

With a lot of snow blanketing the ground and more falling as we arrived, it was truly a winter wonderland. We road the Bear Cub trail, a green trail ideal for beginners. After that, we tackled the 6.9-kilometre Bobcat loop, which was more challenging and a blast to navigate.

Trail Highlights:

  • Beginner-Friendly Loops: Short and smooth trails for newcomers to build confidence.

  • Advanced Tracks: Longer routes with steeper inclines and thrilling descents.

  • Scenic Views: Snow-laden trees and occasional glimpses of wildlife.

  • Chalet: There is an on-site chalet where you can change, warm up by the fire and enjoy a snack.

Fat biking trail pass

Day passes or memberships are required to ski, cycle, walk or hike on the trails at Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre. A fat biking trail pass is $25 for a full day or $17.50 after 2 pm.

Rental Information

If you don’t have your own fat bike, no problem! The center and nearby shops, like Parry Sound Bikes, offer rentals. Rates typically range from $40–$60 per day. Be sure to call ahead to reserve, especially on weekends.

Where to Stay in Parry Sound

After a day on the trails, you’ll want a cozy spot to rest.

Comfort Inn Parry Sound - Convenient and budget-friendly, this hotel is just a short drive from downtown and the trails. This was our choice, and it was a good one. Our newly renovated room was super comfortable, and being able to park the car outside the room is a definite bonus when dealing with sports equipment.

Parry Sound offers accommodation choices for every budget, and you can find additional options at - lodging options.

Dining and Breweries

After a fun day on the trail, it is time to refuel with some of Parry Sound’s best dining and craft beer:

Trestle Brewing Company

A local favourite, Trestle Brewing offers a variety of beers, from its classic Trestle Golden Ale to rich stouts. Pair your pint with hearty pub fare like burgers or poutine. Experience the year-round patio vibe in one of the bubbles or the yurt. Unfortunately, the taproom and kitchen are closed for the month of January, so this experience has to wait until next time.

Maurizio’s Pizzeria

Craving pizza? Maurizio’s serves up delicious wood-fired creations with fresh toppings.

We loved the pizza, service and atmosphere at Maurizio’s, and we highly recommend it.

Local Attractions

  • Stop by Tower Hill Lookout for breathtaking views of the town and Georgian Bay

  • Bobby Orr Hall Of Fame: If you like hockey, make sure to go to the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

  • Legend Spirits Company: a craft distillery and retail shop located on the historic Seguin River in downtown Parry Sound.

Day 2: Parry Sound to Bracebridge

We drove to Bracebridge and the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre on the second day.

How to Get There

The drive from Parry Sound takes just over an hour (approximately 100 km). Take Highway 400 South, then merge onto Highway 141 East, High Falls Rd, and Highway 11 North.

Enjoy winter fat biking at the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre.

Fat Biking at the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre

Located 15 minutes north of Bracebridge along Highway 11, the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre (thanks to the efforts of the Muskoka Off-Road Cycling Association (MORCA), its many volunteers, and community support) is a haven for winter sports. Its fat biking trails are no exception. With 16 km of multi-use groomed trails, it’s a perfect spot for riders of all levels.

Trail Highlights:

  • Easy Loops: Ideal for families and beginners.

  • Intermediate Routes: Slightly more technical trails with gentle climbs.

  • Scenic Paths: Ride along the Muskoka River and through dense, snowy forests.

  • Washrooms: outhouse style toilets

  • Water: There are NO water fill stations within the BRMC, so bring enough water for your ride!

The Ride

With fresh snow overnight, we set the first tracks on many trails, which made for fun but slow going. We mainly stayed on the trails around the northern parking area. The snow-laden forest was spectacular, and it's easy to see why this is one of Ontario's best fat biking destinations.

Fat Biking Trail Pass.

There is no official trail pass required to enjoy the trails, but user support is much appreciated, and you can make a donation to the Muskoka Off-Road Cycling Association.

Winter Driving

Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready by equipping it with snow tires, an emergency kit, and a full windshield washer fluid tank. Fill your gas tank when you can, not just when you have to; you never know when traffic and circumstances will make your trip longer than expected. In Muskoka, weather conditions can change quickly.

During our two-day trip, we experienced blue skies and sunshine, a snowstorm, sections of whiteouts, and slushy roads.
